Rubens Rockpools
My current body of work emerges from a painting technique I’ve developed over many years of working with oils. The ocean is my language. It is a place, a memory, a mythology, a mirror. Years of exploring, drawing, and painting the sea have filled my imagination with images: mermaids, sea spirits, pearl divers, and strange, luminous creatures. These fragments drift to the surface as I paint.
Recently, I’ve been inspired by Rubens’ The Great Last Judgment with its dynamic energy, emotional intensity, and the interplay of divine light and darkness. While my work is not narrative in the same sense, I’m drawn to the spiritual charge, the internal luminosity and psychological depth in Rubens’ vision. It echoes my own fascination with the thin veil between the seen and the unseen.
My process is deeply intuitive. The image reveals itself through the act of painting, guided by a desire to let an internal light illuminate the image. Forms remain fluid, elusive, and often ambiguous. This openness invites the viewer to enter a threshold space where meaning is felt rather than defined.
